Sierra's Seaworthy Tattoos at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade

Last month, at the 35th annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade, I met Sierra, who was kind enough to share her appropriately-themed tattoos on her sides.

First, this octopus:

She credited this work to Siege (@siegeart) from Revival Art Collective (@revivalartcollective) in Phoenix, Arizona.

On the other side of her torso, she has this tattoo:

This one she credited to Moeh Haywood (@Moehskee) who tattoos out of Crimson Hilt Tattoo (@crimsonhiltattoo) in Denver.

Sierra told me the jellyfish and octopus tattoos are a nod to the fact that she studied marine biology.

Emory Shares Two Cool Tattoos

I met Emory last month at the 35th Annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade (@mermaidparade). She shared this cool tattoo:

For those of you unfamiliar with the Kentile Floors sign, this was a highly visible landmark perched high over the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn.

Louie Ozomek (@louiescustomtattooing) at Hand of Glory Tattoo (@handofglorytattoo) in Brooklyn did a nice job replicating the sign on Emory' biceps.

The sign was dismantled in 2014, but Emory wanted to "preserve its memory" on her arm as a tribute to the familiar symbol that stood in Brooklyn for sixty-five years.

Emory also shared this piece on the back of her other arm:

She got this at Magic Cobra Tattoo Society (@magiccobratattoo) in Brooklyn, as part of a fundraiser called Party to Protect, in support of Planned Parenthood (@plannedparenthood).

Jill's Mermaid (35th Annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade)

This past Saturday, I went out to Coney Island to catch the 35th Annual Mermaid Parade (@medmaidparade). This annual tradition has been ideal for Tattoosday inkspotting and this year was a banner year, having interviewed a dozen or so folks with cool tattoos, which we'll be sharing in the weeks to come.

Our first contributor is Jill. who shared this theme-related piece:

Jill's daughter had a bit to do with this tattoo, especially the top section. "Make me a mermaid," she said, and Jill went to her artist, Timmy Cronin (@TimmyTattooCronin) from Timmy Tattoo in Huntington, New York.

"I like his style," Jill told me, and I have to agree. I actually met Timmy at a supermarket in Brooklyn seven years ago (recounted here) and have featured work from his shop a few times over the years.

Bobby's Memorial for His Mother

Earlier this month, I went for a bike ride out to Coney Island and, while on the boardwalk, I stopped to introduce myself to a much-tattooed gentleman named Bobby (@thisfellow), who was out taking photos.

He offered up the following tattoo of his mother:

This is a memorial portrait of his mother. Simply put, Bobby told me, "I love the piece ... it is a classic photo of my mom when she was in her twenties."

Bobby credited the artist Legion Avegno (@legion_avegno) at Fallen Sparrow Tattoo Company (@fallensparrowtattoos) in Kissimmee, Florida.

Christina's Rooster at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade

Last Saturday at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade (@MermaidParade) I met quite a few people with cool tattoos. Christina was one of these folks, and this was one of my favorites from the day:

Full disclosure, having a rooster tattoo myself, I have a tendency to like other people's as well.

Christina explained that her grandmother collected roosters, so this drawing she did is an homage to her.

She credited Derek Mullins from Metamorph Tattoo Studios (@metamorphtattoo) in Chicago.

Mikey's Joker at the Mermaid Parade

Saturday at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, there were thousands of tattoos to see. This one really jumped out at us:
