Reconnecting With Amber

Over the years, I've passed out a lot of cards, hoping to open a dialogue with people about their tattoos, but often never hearing from them again. That's just the way it goes. Occasionally, I will run into them by chance, and we'll be able to connect and put something together.

Such is the case with Amber, who I had met and talked to a couple of times a year or two ago at my favorite local beer garden, where she had worked for a very short period of time.

Imagine my surprise when, last week, I sat down on the subway next to her and was able to capture one of her spectacular tattoos:

Amber credited this great black and gray thigh piece to Nico Negron (@niconegron) from Tattoo Afterlife (@afterlife) in Huntington, New York.

She told me it was based on several references and took about seven hours to complete.

Seth's Wrists Bridge the River

I met Seth on a lower Manhattan train platform in August.

I noticed he had some interesting tattoos on his wrists and I asked about them.

These skyline tattoos are super cool, even moreso when you see that they wrap entirely around his wrists:

Seth explained that, "both wrists feature the Brooklyn Bridge, but one is as if you were going from Brooklyn to Manhattan and the other the opposite direction."

He added:

"Being a transplant, I had set a goal of living in NY for one year at some point in my life. After doing it for 8 years, I decided it was finally time to make it part of me permanently, thus the tattoo."

He credited the artist Patrick Conlon (@lurkus69) at Speakeasy Tattoo (@nyspeakeasytattoo) in Peekskill, New York. Patrick is no stranger to Tattoosday, we've featured his work previously here, here and here.

A Woman and a Wolf

On Friday evening, I was standing on the subway platform at Columbus Circle, headed to Central Park, when I looked over and saw a young woman with a stunning tattoo on her thigh.

As the train approached, there was not much time for discussion. I gave her my card and asked if I could take a picture of the tattoo. She consented:

Even though the top of the wolf headdress is covered by fabric, you can still see what a stunning tattoo this is.

I did not get the name of the woman who shared the tattoo, but she did have time to credit her artist, Marc Fischer (@marcfischertattooist) who works out of PechSchwarz Tattoo (@pechschwarztattoo) in Berlin.

I would add that this seems an appropriate tattoo to share on this special day, July 31, for we are marking our 9th anniversary today. Nine years blogging about tattoo spotted on the streets of New York City!

It is exactly for encounters like this, a brief exchange of praise and information about someone's tattoo, that this site was conceived and it is the friendliness and willingness of strangers to share that has sustained us over the years.

I humbly thank all of our contributors, and all of our fans, who continue to support and sustain this little tattoo blog as we march onward toward our tenth anniversary next summer.

Some Amazing Black and Grey on Joel's Arm

Last week I met Joel on Broadway, downtown near Bowling Green. His arms were fully tattooed, with a panoply of black and grey work. He was kind enough to share this small section with us:

We talked about the two elements above in great detail.

First is the portrait on his forearm, which Joel explained:

"The tattoo artist is out of Miami, Javier Betancourt (@JavierBetancourt) ... he was doing a week-long stay at Three Kings [in Brooklyn] ... my wife ... found him on Instagram ... I had this idea for something much more subtle, actually, it was just sort of going to be hinting that it was her, it was going to be more Sailor Jerry, or it was going to be a silhouette ... But then we saw his work and - it was the first time I'd seen somebody do [something] like a stylized caricature ... it's very statuesque, as opposed to, like, when you see people get portraits, it's like they're trying too hard to mimic the photograph, whereas he would just take certain accents from the photograph to make the image..."

Needless to say, Joel and his wife were very pleased with the end result.

Directly above the image of his wife is a magnificent skull that spans the middle of his arm. The artist is Tamara Santiba�ez (@TamaraSantibanez) out of Saved Tattoo (@Saved_Tattoo) in Brooklyn. "I just came across her," Joel told me, "because I liked some of the work that I saw."
